  • Religious Sites In Mumbai Now “Loudspeaker-Free”: Top Cop

All loudspeakers from religious structures have been removed. Mumbai is now loudspeaker-free from all religious structures,” Mr Bharti told news agency PTI.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti on Saturday asserted that the city is now entirely free of directional loudspeakers after its personnel successfully completed a comprehensive crackdown on public address systems at all religious structures.

“All loudspeakers from religious structures have been removed. Mumbai is now loudspeaker-free from all religious structures,” Bharti told PTI.

The police commissioner, refuting claims of selective targeting, made it clear that religious structures of a particular community had not been singled out and stressed that the operation was conducted methodically, in line with the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s directive for proper and non-arbitrary action.

“We engaged in deliberations with community and religious leaders and also political party leaders and prevailed upon them,” Bharti explained, highlighting the collaborative approach taken before implementing the measures.

This action follows an order issued by the Bombay High Court in January this year, in which the police were directed to take prompt action against loudspeakers violating noise pollution norms and rules.

The high court reiterated that the use of loudspeakers is not considered an essential part of any religion.

Commenting about the scale of the operation, the police chief said, “We have removed around 1,500 directional loudspeakers from religious structures across the city. The police will also ensure that such loudspeakers are not put up again.” While the ban on permanent loudspeakers is now in effect, the police commissioner clarified that temporary permissions for the use of loudspeakers will be granted during religious festivals.

  • Government Proposes To Make Two Helmets Mandatory For New 2-Wheelers

The government has proposed to make it mandatory for the two-wheeler manufacturers to provide two helmets at the time of vehicle purchase.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed important changes to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 to make this new rule into effect.

According to an official notification by the government, this rule will become mandatory within three months after the final notification of the new amendment rules is published in the official gazette.

As per the draft notification released by the government on June 23, 2025, the new rule aims to enhance road safety for both riders and pillion passengers. The notification said “At the time of purchase of the two wheeler, three months from the date of commencement of Central Motor Vehicles (—- Amendment) Rules, 2025, the manufacturer of the two wheeler shall supply two protective headgears conforming to specifications prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards at the time of purchase of a two wheeler”.

The helmets provided must meet the quality standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). However, this requirement will not apply to individuals who are exempted under Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

In addition to the helmet provision, the government has also proposed another safety measure. From January 1, 2026, all new L2 category two-wheelers, which include motorcycles and scooters with engine capacity above 50cc or top speeds exceeding 50 km/h–will need to be fitted with Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS).

The ABS must comply with Indian Standard IS14664:2010, ensuring better control and reduced chances of skidding, especially during sudden braking.

The proposed rules are currently open for public feedback. Citizens and stakeholders

  • Shielding Criminals?’ Trinamool Raps MP Over Rape Remark, He Claps Back

After Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee’s remarks on the Kolkata law student rape case sparked outrage, the party condemned them. Mr Banerjee hit back and asked if the Trinamool was supporting leaders who are shielding criminalsThe Trinamool Congress, facing a relentless attack from the BJP over the links of the main accused in the Kolkata law student rape case to its student wing, found itself sinking deeper into a quagmire on Saturday after one of its own MPs decided to train his guns on the party and asked whether it was supporting leaders who are shielding criminals.

Barely had the Trinamool Congress begun recovering after distancing itself from Monojit Mishra, the main accused in Wednesday’s rape of the student at the South Calcutta Law College, when its MP Kalyan Banerjee’s comments gave the opposition ammunition to launch a renewed offensive against it on Saturday. The party censured him, but Mr Banerjee decided not to back down and go on the warpath instead.

In remarks seen as an attempt to downplay the seriousness of the crime and deflect accountability, Mr Banerjee had said, “What can be done if a friend rapes his friend? Will the police be in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (the survivor)? Who does all this criminality and molestation? Some men do it. So, who should women fight against? Women should fight against these perverted men,” he said on Saturday.

“I am saying the same thing again and again. Whoever has done it must be arrested immediately. But if a friend rapes a friend, how can that be corruption? The condition of safety and security is the same everywhere.  As long as the mindset of men remains this way, these incidents will keep occurring,” he added.

  • How To Extract Gold From Old Phones And Laptops: Scientists Reveal Simple New Method

As the digital age accelerates, the world is facing a mounting challenge: electronic waste. Driven by rapid advancements in AI and internet-based technologies, discarded phones, laptops, and other devices are piling up at an alarming rate.

According to the UN’s Global E-waste Monitor (GEM), e-waste is growing five times faster than it is being properly recycled. In 2022 alone, a record 62 million tonnes of e-waste were generated-an 82% increase since 2010. This volume is expected to rise another 32%, reaching 82 million tonnes by 2030. The discarded devices not only contribute to environmental harm but also represent billions of dollars in lost rare and valuable resources. Shockingly, just 1% of global rare earth element demand is currently met through e-waste recycling. However, scientists have now developed a promising solution. A new, safe, and sustainable method for extracting gold from electronic waste has been published in Nature Sustainability. The technique offers a cleaner alternative to current practices and could also reduce the health and environmental risks linked to small-scale gold mining.

The authors of the study offer insight into the method. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Gold Dissolution – Gold is first dissolved using trichloroisocyanuric acid, which is activated by a halide catalyst to oxidize gold from e-waste materials.

Step 2: Gold Binding – A specially developed polysulfide polymer sorbent is introduced to selectively bind the dissolved gold from the leach solution.

Step 3: Gold Recovery – The gold is then recovered in high purity by either pyrolyzing or depolymerizing the polymer that captured it.
